Sonny John Moore, performing as Skrillex, was born in Highland Park, Los Angeles, California on January 15, 1988. He began his career as vocalist of the post-hardcore band From First to Last (2004-2007), with vocal performances on their album Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Body Count (2004). He departed the band in 2007 due to vocal cord issues and pivoted to electronic music production. His 2010 EP Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites became a international viral hit and is widely cited as one of the foundational documents of the brostep / dubstep popularization movement of the early 2010s. He founded OWSLA Records in 2011, which has launched the careers of electronic artists including Porter Robinson, Mat Zo, and others. He won eight Grammy Awards, including Best Dance Recording and Best Dance/Electronic Album wins. His 2023 albums Quest for Fire and Don't Get Too Close (released the same day in February 2023) marked his first studio LPs in nine years. He has collaborative work with Diplo (as Jack Ü, 2014-2017), Justin Bieber, and dozens of other artists.
Skrillex's sound is foundational to brostep / dubstep popularization - combining dubstep, brostep, electronic dance music, post-hardcore influences, electro house, drum and bass, trap, and pop with his distinctive production approach (use of distorted bass and 'wobble bass' sounds), varied compositional approaches across multiple electronic music genres, and lyrical content drawing on contemporary EDM and pop traditions.
