Silverstein formed in Burlington, Ontario, Canada in 2000. The band's name was taken from American children's poet Shel Silverstein (Where the Sidewalk Ends 1974 / A Light in the Attic 1981 children's poetry classics). They have been associated with the contemporary post-hardcore and screamo scenes since the early 2000s. They signed with Victory Records and released their debut When Broken Is Easily Fixed (2003). Their 2005 follow-up Discovering the Waterfront became their commercial breakthrough. They have continued releasing material across multiple decades.
Silverstein's sound combines post-hardcore, screamo, emo, metalcore, alternative rock, melodic hardcore, and pop punk with Shane Told's distinctive vocal delivery (use of clean melodic and screamed approaches), virtuosic dual guitar arrangements, and lyrical content addressing relationships, mental health, mortality, and personal experience drawing on confessional emo and post-hardcore songwriting traditions.
