The four attended Fairfax High School in Los Angeles together. Hillel Slovak died of a heroin overdose on June 25, 1988 at age 26, with impact on the band's substance abuse trajectory across subsequent decades. John Frusciante (born March 5, 1970, Queens, New York) joined as guitarist in late 1988, replacing Slovak. He has had multiple stints with the band - 1988-1992, 2007-2009 (after a substance abuse battle), and 2019-present.
