Primus

Primus formed in El Sobrante, California in 1984, with Les Claypool's virtuosic slap bass and eccentric vocals steering funk metal somewhere gloriously weird. Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) and Pork Soda (1993) are the classic entry points, with Frank Zappa's influence all over them. Dig into Primus vinyl, CDs, and reissues at Wax Trax Records.

About Primus

Primus formed in El Sobrante, California in 1984 around Les Claypool. The classic lineup featuring Larry LaLonde and Tim Alexander solidified by the late 1980s. They are widely cited as one of the most distinctive contemporary funk metal, progressive rock, and alternative rock acts - defying conventional genre categorization with their distinctive blend of funk, metal, progressive rock, country, and surreal experimental compositional approaches. Les Claypool's foundational virtuosic slap bass approach and eccentric vocal delivery has been influential on contemporary bassists. The band broke up in 2000 with reunion in 2003. Tim Alexander left the band multiple times across the band's history (replaced by Brain in 1996-2010, then returning), with the band settling on Alexander again from 2010-2024. Claypool has parallel work as Oysterhead (with Phish's Trey Anastasio and Police's Stewart Copeland, 2001), the Les Claypool Frog Brigade, Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, Claypool Lennon Delirium (with Sean Lennon), and dozens of other parallel projects. They have continued releasing material across multiple decades. Their 2017 album The Desaturating Seven was based on a 1978 Italian children's book. Their foundational influence on contemporary funk metal, progressive rock, and broader alternative rock is widely cited.

Sound and style

Primus's sound combines funk metal, progressive rock, alternative rock, experimental rock, math rock, art rock, and avant-garde with Les Claypool's foundational virtuosic slap bass approach, eccentric vocal delivery, virtuosic dual guitar and drum arrangements (Larry LaLonde / Tim Alexander interplay), and varied compositional approaches drawing on Frank Zappa (influence) alongside funk, metal, country, and progressive rock traditions.
