About Primitive Man
Primitive Man formed in Denver, Colorado in 2012 around Ethan Lee McCarthy. Their distinctive blend of doom metal, sludge metal, drone, noise, and extreme nihilistic and dark lyrical content has positioned them as one of the most uncompromising contemporary doom metal and sludge metal acts. They have been active in the contemporary extreme metal underground alongside contemporaries like Khanate, Sunn O))), and Cult Leader. They have continued releasing material across multiple decades.
Sound and style
Primitive Man's sound combines doom metal, sludge metal, drone, noise, blackened doom, post-metal, and death-doom with McCarthy's distinctive vocal delivery (use of extreme growled and screamed vocals), extreme slow tempos and dense distorted guitar arrangements, and nihilistic lyrical content addressing depression, mortality, social collapse, and broader existential themes drawing on extreme metal traditions.
