About Polaris

Polaris formed in Sydney, New South Wales in 2012. They have been associated with the contemporary Australian metalcore and post-hardcore scenes alongside contemporaries like Northlane, In Hearts Wake, and Make Them Suffer. Their 2017 album The Mortal Coil received critical attention. Their 2023 album Fatalism received attention amid the tragic death of lead guitarist Ryan Siew on June 18, 2023 (suspected suicide; the band announced the death publicly several days after with mental health awareness messaging). Jake Steinhauser replaced Siew. The band has continued releasing material across multiple decades.

Sound and style

Polaris's sound combines metalcore, post-hardcore, melodic metalcore, progressive metalcore, alternative metal, and djent with Hails's distinctive vocal delivery (use of clean melodic and growled approaches), virtuosic dual guitar arrangements, and lyrical content addressing mental health, mortality, and personal experience drawing on confessional songwriting traditions alongside contemporary metalcore influences.
