Pierce the Veil formed in San Diego, California in 2006 around brothers Vic Fuentes and Mike Fuentes, who had previously been members of the post-hardcore band Before Today. They signed with Equal Vision Records and built a audience across the late 2000s and 2010s in the contemporary post-hardcore and emo scenes. Their 2012 album Collide with the Sky received commercial attention. Mike Fuentes was accused of sexual misconduct with a minor in 2017 and departed the band, with legal and personal consequences. The remaining members have continued with substituted drummers. Their 2023 album The Jaws of Life received critical attention.
