Phantogram is the electronic duo of childhood friends Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, formed in Greenwich, New York in 2007. Eyelid Movies (2010) set the template — moody trip hop textures under indie pop hooks — and Voices (2014) sharpened it. They also cut a 2015 EP with Big Boi as Big Grams. Phantogram formed in Greenwich, New York in 2007 around childhood friends Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter. They signed with Barsuk Records and released their 2010 debut Eyelid Movies, which received critical attention. They have continued releasing material across multiple decades. Their 2015 collaboration with OutKast's Big Boi as Big Grams (released the Big Grams EP) brought them new audiences. Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter have been open about her sister Becky Sponsler Barthel's suicide in 2016 - material on their 2020 album Ceremony addresses that loss.
Phantogram's sound combines electronic, indie pop, electronic rock, dream pop, alternative rock, synth-pop, and trip hop with Barthel's distinctive vocal delivery, Carter's atmospheric production approaches, and arrangements drawing on classic 1990s electronic music and indie rock alongside contemporary alternative electronic influences.
