Operation Ivy

Operation Ivy was a ska punk band formed in Berkeley, California in 1987 and gone by May 1989 — just the Hectic EP and the LP Energy on Lookout! Records. That tiny catalog launched second-wave American ska punk and sent Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman on to Rancid. Find Operation Ivy vinyl, CDs, and reissues at Wax Trax Records.

About Operation Ivy

Operation Ivy formed in Berkeley, California in 1987 around Tim Armstrong, Matt Freeman, Dave Mello, and Jesse Michaels. They were named after the 1952 American atomic bomb test series. They are widely cited as one of the foundational acts of the second-wave American ska punk revival of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Their entire studio catalog consists of two releases on Lookout! Records: the 1988 Hectic EP and the 1989 LP Energy (recorded across multiple sessions). The band dissolved in May 1989 after only two years and approximately 185 live shows. Armstrong and Freeman subsequently formed Rancid in 1991, with commercial breakthrough across the 1990s. Their foundational influence on Rancid, NOFX, Green Day, Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish, and the broader 1990s punk and ska punk revival is widely cited. The Lookout! Records reissue of Energy + Hectic (1991, combined release) has been the standard documentation of the band's complete studio output.

Sound and style

Operation Ivy's sound is foundational to the second-wave American ska punk revival - combining ska punk, hardcore punk, ska, punk rock, melodic hardcore, and 2 tone with Jesse Michaels's distinctive vocal delivery, Tim Armstrong's foundational guitar work, Matt Freeman's foundational rapid-fire bass approach, and arrangements drawing on classic 2 tone era ska (the Specials, Madness) and hardcore punk alongside the band's original synthesis.
