Nothing is an American shoegaze band formed in Philadelphia in 2010 around Domenic Palermo, formerly of the hardcore band Horror Show, and a defining act of the shoegaze revival. Nothing formed in Philadelphia in 2010 around Domenic Palermo, who had previously fronted the influential 2000s Philadelphia hardcore band Horror Show. Palermo's public history with a 2002 manslaughter conviction (he served two years in prison for a fatal stabbing in self-defense) has been addressed in his Nothing material. Their distinctive blend of shoegaze, dream pop, and heavier guitar-driven approaches has positioned them as a defining contemporary shoegaze revival act alongside contemporaries like Whirr, DIIV, and Lush (the reformed UK band). They signed with Relapse Records and have released five studio albums across multiple decades.
Nothing's sound combines shoegaze, alternative rock, dream pop, slowcore, post-hardcore, and noise rock with Palermo's distinctive vocal delivery, dense layered guitar arrangements (use of distortion and reverb), and lyrical content addressing depression, mortality, and personal experience drawing on autobiographical reference points.
