About Neutral Milk Hotel
Neutral Milk Hotel formed in Ruston, Louisiana in 1989 around Jeff Mangum, originally as a Mangum solo project. The band relocated to Athens, Georgia in the mid-1990s and became part of the Elephant 6 Recording Company collective (alongside the Apples in Stereo, Of Montreal, Olivia Tremor Control, and others). Their 1998 album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea - recorded with a expanded band lineup at Pet Sounds Studio in Denver, with production by Robert Schneider - addressed themes of Anne Frank's diary, World War II, religion, and personal experience. The album is widely cited as one of the most important indie rock albums of the 1990s, with influence on the broader indie rock and indie folk movements of the subsequent two decades. Jeff Mangum retreated from public life following the album's release and the band's 1999 dissolution. The band reunited briefly in 2013-2015 for limited tour activity. The band has not released subsequent material. Their foundational influence on contemporary indie rock is widely cited.
Sound and style
Neutral Milk Hotel's sound combines indie rock, indie folk, lo-fi indie, psychedelic folk, art rock, and avant-garde with Mangum's distinctive vocal delivery (use of dramatic emotional projection and lyrical content addressing surreal imagery), varied instrumental arrangements (including use of horns, accordion, singing saw, and other unconventional instruments), and lyrical content addressing dreams, history, religion, and personal experience drawing on surrealist and literary reference points.
