About N.E.R.D.

N.E.R.D. (No-one Ever Really Dies) formed in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1999 around Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, and Shay Haley. Pharrell and Hugo are also the production duo The Neptunes, which has produced for Jay-Z, Britney Spears, Kelis, Snoop Dogg, and dozens of others across the 2000s. N.E.R.D. functioned as their live-band side project. Their 2002 debut In Search of... was originally released with electronic production and later re-recorded with live instrumentation from the band Spymob - the live-band version is the canonical release. They have continued releasing material intermittently across multiple decades. Their 2017 album No One Ever Really Dies featured guest contributions from Rihanna, Kendrick Lamar, Andre 3000, Future, and others.

Sound and style

N.E.R.D.'s sound combines hip hop, funk rock, alternative hip hop, rap rock, electronic hip hop, rock, and pop with Pharrell's distinctive falsetto vocal delivery, Chad Hugo's signature electronic production, live band arrangements, and arrangements drawing on classic 1970s funk, hip hop, and contemporary alternative rock influences.
