Muse formed in Teignmouth, Devon in 1994 around Matt Bellamy, Chris Wolstenholme, and Dominic Howard (high school friends). They have remained the same three-member lineup across their multi-decade career. Their distinctive sound - combining alternative rock, progressive rock, electronic music, classical music influences, and conspiracy theory and political content in their lyrics - has positioned them as one of the most distinctive contemporary arena rock bands. Their 2003 album Absolution and 2006 follow-up Black Holes and Revelations established their international commercial success. Their 2009 album The Resistance addressed political themes, and their 2015 album Drones was a conceptual album addressing autonomous weapons. They have won two Grammy Awards (Best Rock Album for The Resistance in 2011 and for Drones in 2016).
Muse's sound combines alternative rock, progressive rock, art rock, space rock, electronic rock, hard rock, and symphonic rock with Bellamy's distinctive multi-octave vocal delivery (with use of falsetto and operatic registers), virtuosic guitar work, and arrangements drawing on classical music (particularly Rachmaninoff and Chopin), prog rock (Queen, Pink Floyd), and electronic music influences.
