MUNA

MUNA is an American indie pop trio — Katie Gavin, Naomi McPherson, and Josette Maskin — formed at USC in Los Angeles in 2013, all three openly queer. After two RCA/Columbia albums they landed on Phoebe Bridgers's Saddest Factory imprint for 2022's self-titled breakthrough, home of Silk Chiffon. About MUNA

MUNA formed at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles in 2013 around Katie Gavin, Naomi McPherson, and Josette Maskin (all of whom met as USC students). All three members are openly queer-identifying. They signed with RCA Records / Columbia for their early catalog before being dropped in 2021. They subsequently signed with Saddest Factory Records (Phoebe Bridgers's Dead Oceans imprint) for their 2022 self-titled MUNA album, which received critical attention and brought them new commercial breakthrough with the singles Silk Chiffon (featuring Phoebe Bridgers) and What I Want. They have continued releasing material across multiple decades with integration with the contemporary queer indie pop community.

Sound and style

MUNA's sound combines indie pop, electropop, synth-pop, alternative pop, indie electronic, and dance-pop with Gavin's distinctive vocal delivery, atmospheric synthesizer-driven production, and lyrical content addressing relationships, queer identity, and personal experience.
