Mitsuki Laycock, performing as Mitski, was born in Mie Prefecture, Japan on September 27, 1990 to a Japanese mother and American father. She was raised across thirteen countries (her father's State Department career meant international relocation throughout her childhood) before settling in New York City to attend SUNY Purchase. Her early albums Lush (2012) and Retired from Sad, New Career in Business (2013) were senior project releases through SUNY Purchase's Conservatory of Music. She signed with Don Giovanni for Bury Me at Makeout Creek (2014), then moved to Dead Oceans for subsequent releases.
