About Midwife
Midwife is the recording project of Madeline Johnston, based in Denver, Colorado. She launched the project in the late 2010s. She also operates the project Sister Grotto (her earlier solo work). Her work has been positioned in the contemporary slowcore, dream pop, and ambient scenes alongside contemporaries like Grouper (Liz Harris), Have a Nice Life, and others. Her 2023 album No Depression in Heaven, a collaboration with Vyva Melinkolya, received critical attention.
Sound and style
Midwife's sound combines slowcore, dream pop, ambient, shoegaze, drone, and dark folk with Johnston's distinctive whispered vocal delivery, dense layered guitar drone arrangements, and atmospheric production drawing on classic slowcore and dream pop traditions alongside contemporary ambient music influences.
