MGMT formed at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut in 2002 around Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser. Their debut Oracular Spectacular (2007) became one of the most commercially and culturally important indie pop albums of the late 2000s, with the singles Time to Pretend, Kids, and Electric Feel becoming international hits. Their subsequent albums Congratulations (2010) and MGMT (2013) moved into more experimental and psychedelic rock territory, with less commercial success but cult appreciation. Little Dark Age (2018) and the 2024 album Loss of Life have restored their commercial relevance. They contributed production work to Lil Yachty's Let's Start Here (2023).
