Matthew Tyler Maeson was born in Virginia Beach, Virginia on July 11, 1992. His parents are prison ministry musicians, and he traveled extensively with their ministry across his childhood, performing in prisons. He launched his solo recording career with self-released material in the mid-2010s before signing with Atlantic Records. His 2019 debut Bank on the Funeral received critical attention. His 2018 single Cringe was viral and became his commercial breakthrough.
