Mac Miller

About Mac Miller

Malcolm James McCormick, performing as Mac Miller, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 19, 1992. He launched his recording career as a teenager and signed with Rostrum Records. His debut Blue Slide Park (2011) became the first independently-distributed album in 16 years to debut at number one on the Billboard 200. He moved progressively from his early frat rap material toward more experimental, jazz-influenced, and personally vulnerable material across his catalog. His parallel work as Larry Lovestein & the Velvet Revival (jazz vocal material) and Delusional Thomas (more aggressive material) demonstrated his stylistic range. He died from an accidental overdose of fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol on September 7, 2018 at age 26. Circles (2020), released posthumously, was widely cited as one of his most important works. Balloonerism (2025) continued the posthumous release program.

Sound and style

Mac Miller's sound combines hip hop, alternative hip hop, jazz rap, conscious hip hop, neo-soul, and frat rap with his distinctive vocal delivery and progressive stylistic exploration drawing on jazz, neo-soul, electronic, and traditional hip hop reference points across his catalog. His foundational influence on contemporary hip hop and his legacy is widely cited.
