M83 formed in Antibes, France in 2001 as a duo of Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau. Fromageau departed in 2004, with the project continuing as Gonzalez's solo vehicle. The project is named after the spiral galaxy Messier 83 in the constellation Hydra. Their work has progressively explored ambient, shoegaze, electronic, dream pop, and synth-pop traditions across multiple decades. Hurry Up, We're Dreaming (2011), a double album with the single Midnight City, was widely cited as one of the most important electronic albums of the 2010s. M83 has also extensively composed film scores including Oblivion (2013) and You and the Night (2013).
M83's sound combines electronic, shoegaze, dream pop, synth-pop, ambient, electronic rock, and post-rock with extensive analog synthesizer arrangements, atmospheric production, vocoder effects, and arrangements drawing on classic 1980s synth-pop, shoegaze, and contemporary electronic music traditions.
