Luis Miguel Gallego Basteri was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 19, 1970 to a Spanish father (Luisito Rey) and an Italian mother (Marcela Basteri, who disappeared in 1986 and whose case remains unsolved). He was raised in Mexico from infancy and is identified as Mexican by both citizenship and cultural identity. He launched his recording career as a child star in 1981 and has continued as one of the most commercially successful Latin music artists in history. His 1991 album Romance launched the Latin American bolero revival of the 1990s, with the subsequent Segundo Romance (1994) and Romances (1997) continuing the series. He has won six Grammy Awards and five Latin Grammy Awards. The 2018-2023 Netflix biopic series Luis Miguel: The Series brought his story to new audiences.
