Lucy Dacus was born in Norfolk, Virginia on May 2, 1995 and raised in Mechanicsville, Virginia. She released her debut No Burden (2016) on EggHunt Records before signing with Matador Records for Historian (2018) and subsequent releases. She is a co-founding member of boygenius alongside Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker (the trio launched in 2018 with a self-titled EP). The 2023 boygenius album the record won three Grammy Awards including Best Alternative Music Album at the 2024 ceremony. She is openly queer and has been in a public relationship with Julien Baker. She moved to Geffen Records for Forever Is a Feeling (2025).
