LCD Soundsystem formed in Brooklyn, New York in 2002 around James Murphy. Murphy co-founded DFA Records in 2001 with Tim Goldsworthy and Jonathan Galkin, providing the label home for the LCD Soundsystem catalog. The 2002 single Losing My Edge (with its Yeah Right pioneering aesthetic of self-aware DJ culture commentary) launched the project. Their self-titled debut LCD Soundsystem (2005) and follow-ups Sound of Silver (2007) and This Is Happening (2010) became defining documents of the 2000s indie rock and dance-punk crossover. The band dissolved in 2011 with a farewell concert at Madison Square Garden (documented in the Spike Jonze-produced film Shut Up and Play the Hits, 2012). They reformed in 2015 and released American Dream (2017), which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 - making them one of the few rock bands to achieve a Billboard #1 debut in the streaming era.
LCD Soundsystem's sound combines dance-punk, electronic dance music, dance rock, indie rock, post-punk, electronic, and synth-pop with Murphy's distinctive emotionally direct vocal delivery, dense layered electronic production, and arrangements drawing on Brian Eno, David Bowie's Berlin Trilogy, krautrock, and broader 1970s and 1980s electronic music traditions.
