Kyuss formed in Palm Desert, California in 1987 around members who would become some of the most important figures in stoner rock and contemporary heavy psychedelic rock. The band initially performed as Sons of Kyuss before signing with Dali / Chameleon for their major-label debut Wretch (1991) and the landmark follow-ups Blues for the Red Sun (1992), Welcome to Sky Valley (1994), and...And the Circus Leaves Town (1995). They are widely cited as the foundational stoner rock band, with influence on Queens of the Stone Age (Josh Homme's subsequent band), Sleep, High on Fire, and dozens of other heavy rock acts. The band dissolved in 1995.
Kyuss's sound is foundational to stoner rock as a recognized genre - combining stoner rock, desert rock, heavy psychedelic rock, doom metal, and hard rock with extensive distorted Gibson Les Paul guitar work through bass amplifiers (Homme's signature approach), heavy groove rhythms, and arrangements drawing on Black Sabbath, ZZ Top, and broader 1970s heavy rock traditions.
