Kneecap formed in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 2017 around Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí. They have been a defining contemporary Irish-language artistic act, rapping primarily in Irish (with some English) and engaging with broader Irish republican and Irish-language revival movements. Their 2018 single C.E.A.R.T.A (Irish for rights) was banned by RTE's Irish-language radio station but became viral. The 2024 fictionalized biopic Kneecap, directed by Rich Peppiatt and starring the band as themselves, won the Audience Award at Sundance 2024 and was the UK's submission for Best International Feature at the Academy Awards.
Kneecap's sound combines hip hop, Irish-language hip hop, alternative hip hop, electronic, and political hip hop with bilingual Irish/English vocal delivery, contemporary hip hop production approaches, and politically engaged lyrical content addressing Northern Irish politics, Irish-language identity, partying, and contemporary working-class Belfast experience.
