Their elaborate face paint and stage personas (Stanley as Starchild, Simmons as Demon, Frehley as Spaceman, Criss as Catman) became one of the most widely-recognized rock visual identities of all time. Their breakthrough album Alive! (1975) launched their commercial peak, with Destroyer (1976), Rock and Roll Over (1976), Love Gun (1977), and Alive II (1977) all becoming multi-platinum successes. The band briefly performed without makeup from 1983 to 1996 before resuming the painted personas with the original four-member lineup reunion.
