Osbourne Ruddock, performing as King Tubby, was born in Kingston, Jamaica on January 28, 1941. He was an electrical engineer who worked extensively with sound systems and reggae production from the mid-1960s onward. He is widely cited as the foundational figure in dub music - his innovations in the mid-1970s (including extensive use of delay, reverb, echo, and reductive mixing techniques) became defining components of dub as a recognized genre. His studio collaboration with melodica player Augustus Pablo produced the landmark King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown (1976), widely considered one of the most important dub albums ever recorded. He was a foundational influence on Lee Scratch Perry, Scientist (his protégé), and broader dub and electronic music traditions. He was murdered outside his Kingston home on February 6, 1989 at age 48; the case remains unsolved.
