Justice formed in Paris in 2003 around Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay. They signed with Ed Banger Records (Pedro Winter's label, also home to SebastiAn, Mr. Oizo, Cassius, and others) and released their debut single Waters of Nazareth in 2005. Their debut album Cross (2007) - released visually with a stylized cross design that became iconic - was a landmark of French electronic music and the broader bloghouse movement of the late 2000s. They have continued releasing material across multiple decades, with extensive remix and production work alongside their original albums. Their 2008 documentary A Cross the Universe (with director Romain Gavras) documented their American tour. Their 2024 album Hyperdrama brought them new critical attention.
Justice's sound combines French house, electronic dance music, electro house, dance-rock, nu-disco, and electronic with extensive use of distorted analog synthesizers, classic disco and 1970s rock sampling, and an aesthetic positioning that bridges electronic dance music with rock music traditions. Their work has been a defining template for late-2000s and 2010s electronic music.
