Henry John Deutschendorf Jr., performing as John Denver, was born in Roswell, New Mexico on December 31, 1943. He attended Texas Tech University before pursuing music full-time. He was a member of the Chad Mitchell Trio (1965-1969) before launching his solo career. His 1971 song Take Me Home, Country Roads (co-written with Bill and Taffy Danoff) became his commercial breakthrough. Rocky Mountain High (1972), Sunshine on My Shoulders (1973), Annie's Song (1974), Thank God I'm a Country Boy (1974), and Calypso (1975) followed as additional major hits across his commercial peak. He was an outspoken environmentalist and was made Poet Laureate of Colorado in 1974. He died when his experimental aircraft crashed off the California coast on October 12, 1997 at age 53. Rocky Mountain High was designated as one of Colorado's two state songs in 2007.
