About Jamie xx
James Thomas Smith, performing as Jamie xx, was born in London on October 28, 1988. He is a founding member of the xx (alongside Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim) and produces all the band's material. His solo debut In Colour (2015) was expanded out of his work with Gil Scott-Heron on We're New Here (2011), the producer-driven companion to Scott-Heron's I'm New Here (which Scott-Heron approved before his 2011 death). In Colour was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2015 and earned three Grammy nominations. He continued releasing material with the xx alongside his solo work, with In Waves (2024) marking his return to solo output.
Sound and style
Jamie xx's sound combines electronic, UK garage, deep house, post-dubstep, ambient, and dance music with extensive use of vocal samples, dense rhythmic programming, and atmospheric production approaches drawing on classic UK dance music traditions alongside contemporary indie and dance music aesthetics.
