James Dewitt Yancey was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 7, 1974. He launched his recording career as a producer in the early 1990s, becoming a member of Slum Village alongside T3 and Baatin. He was a member of the Ummah production collective (with Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest) and a core member of the Soulquarians (with D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Questlove, Common, Bilal, and others). His production work appears on Common's Like Water for Chocolate (2000), D'Angelo's Voodoo (2000), Erykah Badu's Mama's Gun (2000), and dozens of other foundational records of the early 2000s. He was diagnosed with TTP (a rare blood disorder) and lupus and died from cardiac arrest on February 10, 2006 at age 32 - three days after the release of his landmark instrumental album Donuts. His catalog has been continuously reissued and expanded by Stones Throw Records, BBE, and his estate.
J Dilla's sound is foundational to instrumental hip hop and contemporary hip hop production - combining hip hop, instrumental hip hop, jazz rap, soul, neo-soul, and electronic with his distinctive humanized programmed drum approach (intentionally swung, off-grid drum patterns that became known as the Dilla feel), extensive sampling of obscure soul and jazz records, and harmonically sophisticated production approaches.
Stones Throw and BBE pressings of the J Dilla catalog are foundational items in instrumental hip hop collecting. Multiple anniversary editions of Donuts have been released, including the 10th and 15th anniversary editions. The catalog has been continuously expanded with posthumous releases through Pay Jay Productions (the estate-run imprint).
