Guster formed at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts in 1991 when Adam Gardner, Ryan Miller, and Brian Rosenworcel were freshmen. The band's signature feature for many years was Rosenworcel's bongo and hand percussion approach (rather than a conventional drum kit), which the band has progressively augmented with conventional drums alongside acoustic and electric instrumentation. They have moved through multiple labels across their career, with the most recent work appearing on their own Ocho Mule label.
Guster's sound combines indie rock, indie pop, alternative rock, folk rock, and power pop with intricate vocal harmonies, melodic acoustic-driven arrangements, and a distinctive bongo-and-hand-percussion rhythmic approach (across much of the catalog).
