Godspeed You! Black Emperor formed in Montreal in 1994 around Efrim Menuck and Mike Moya. The collective name was originally Godspeed You Black Emperor! with the punctuation moving to its current placement after their hiatus. The band has been on Constellation Records (the Montreal label associated with the post-rock and political left collective there) throughout their career. They went on hiatus from 2003 to 2010 before reuniting and continuing with activity through the 2010s and 2020s. The collective shares membership with the parallel band A Silver Mt. Zion.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor's sound combines post-rock, instrumental rock, drone, ambient, and neo-classical with extended compositions (typically 20+ minutes per piece), gradual dynamic builds, extensive use of string sections and field recordings, and politically engaged anti-capitalist orientation.
