Funkadelic formed in 1968 around George Clinton (born July 22, 1941, in Kannapolis, North Carolina) after his earlier work with the doo-wop group the Parliaments (1956-1968). Funkadelic and the parallel Parliament group (relaunched in 1970) shared overlapping membership across the 1970s - together forming the broader Parliament-Funkadelic collective often referred to as P-Funk. The Funkadelic side emphasized funk-rock guitar work (particularly Eddie Hazel's playing on the title track of Maggot Brain), while Parliament emphasized horn-driven funk arrangements. Funkadelic was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Parliament in 1997. George Clinton has continued performing and recording with various P-Funk lineups across the subsequent decades.
Funkadelic's sound combines funk rock, psychedelic funk, soul, R&B, and psychedelic rock with extensive integration of rock guitar work, gospel and doo-wop vocal arrangements, and elaborate conceptual narratives. Their work is widely cited as foundational to funk rock as a recognized genre and one of the most influential American music projects of the 1970s.
