Dead Can Dance formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1981 around Brendan Perry (born June 30, 1959, in London but raised in Auckland) and Lisa Gerrard (born April 12, 1961, in Melbourne). The duo, who were also a romantic couple in the early years, relocated to London in 1982 and signed with 4AD Records, becoming central figures in the label's distinctive aesthetic alongside Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, and others. After their initial run together (1981-1998), they reunited in 2005 and have continued issuing material periodically across the 2010s and 2020s, with Dionysus (2018) and Anastasis (2012) as notable later releases.
Dead Can Dance's sound combines neoclassical darkwave, world music, ethereal wave, gothic rock, and ambient with extensive incorporation of medieval, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, Celtic, and African musical traditions. Gerrard's vocal work, often in invented or non-lexical languages, has been a defining feature; she also has a parallel career composing film scores (Gladiator, with Hans Zimmer, won her a Golden Globe).
