About Danny Brown
Daniel Dewan Sewell was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 16, 1981. He began releasing music in the mid-2000s and launched his solo career in earnest with The Hybrid (2010). XXX (2011), released as a free download on Fool's Gold Records, became a critical breakthrough. He signed with Warp Records for Atrocity Exhibition (2016), making him among the few hip hop artists on the predominantly electronic label. He runs the Bruiser Brigade Records label and collective.
Sound and style
Danny Brown's sound combines hip hop, experimental hip hop, Detroit hip hop, and abstract hip hop with his distinctive high-pitched vocal delivery and willingness to engage with experimental, often unsettling production. Atrocity Exhibition (2016) in particular drew on noise rock, post-punk, and electronic music influences alongside hip hop traditions.
