The Ugly Organ (2003) — theatrical, literate, cello and all — is one of the defining emo records of the 2000s, and Domestica (2000) hits nearly as hard. Cursive formed in Omaha, Nebraska in 1995 around Tim Kasher (vocals, guitar). The band has been a central act on Saddle Creek Records (the Omaha-based label home to Bright Eyes, the Faint, and many others) across their entire career. The lineup has shifted across releases, with cellist Gretta Cohn joining for The Ugly Organ (2003) and departing in 2005. Kasher has been the constant member and primary songwriter. Kasher also leads the band the Good Life as a parallel project.
