Cocteau Twins formed in Grangemouth, Scotland in 1979 around Robin Guthrie and Will Heggie. Elizabeth Fraser joined as vocalist in 1981, and the trio signed with 4AD Records. After Heggie's departure in 1983, Simon Raymonde joined as bassist, completing the longstanding Guthrie/Fraser/Raymonde lineup that recorded the band's most acclaimed work. The band moved from 4AD to Fontana/Capitol for their later catalog before dissolving in 1997 amid personal and creative tensions (Guthrie and Fraser had been a couple). Raymonde co-founded Bella Union Records.
