Rosalino Sánchez Félix was born in Sinaloa, Mexico on August 30, 1960. He moved to the United States in the late 1970s and based himself in Los Angeles, where he began performing and recording for Mexican-American audiences in the late 1980s. His narcocorridos (songs about drug traffickers, often commissioned by their subjects) and traditional corridos established him as a defining figure in regional Mexican music. He was kidnapped after a concert in Culiacán, Sinaloa on May 15, 1992 and found shot to death on May 16, becoming a posthumous icon whose cultural influence continued to grow across the subsequent decades. He is widely regarded as the founding figure of contemporary narcocorrido.
