Dan Snaith was born in Dundas, Ontario on October 7, 1978. He holds a PhD in mathematics from Imperial College London. He began releasing music as Manitoba in 2001 but was forced to change the name in 2004 after a legal dispute with American singer Handsome Dick Manitoba; he has performed as Caribou since.
