Bratmobile was an American punk rock band formed in 1991 across Eugene, Oregon and Olympia, Washington — Allison Wolfe, Erin Smith, and Molly Neuman, co-founders of the riot grrrl movement. Bratmobile formed in Eugene, Oregon and Olympia, Washington in 1991 with the trio of Allison Wolfe, Erin Smith, and Molly Neuman. Along with Bikini Kill, Heavens to Betsy, and others, they were co-founders of the riot grrrl movement that emerged from the Pacific Northwest underground punk scene of the early 1990s. The band released their debut Pottymouth in 1993 and continued through several albums and EPs before disbanding in 1994; they reunited in 1999 and continued until 2003. Members have remained active in other projects.
Bratmobile's sound combines punk rock, garage punk, and indie rock with an explicitly feminist political stance, raw production, and Wolfe's distinctive shouted and sung vocal delivery. Their work centered around the original riot grrrl manifesto of empowering young women in the punk and DIY underground.
Original Kill Rock Stars and Lookout! pressings of the Bratmobile catalog are widely collected as foundational riot grrrl documents. Multiple reissue editions have been released over the years.
