Blur formed in London in 1988 (initially as Seymour) around Damon Albarn, Graham Coxon, Alex James, and Dave Rowntree. The four members have remained the band's only lineup across their entire career. They signed to Food/Parlophone in 1989 and became central figures of the Britpop movement of the mid-1990s. After hiatuses in the 2000s, they reunited for live performances in 2009 and have released sporadic studio material since.
Blur's sound has shifted markedly across their catalog. Their early Madchester-influenced work gave way to the British observational pop of Modern Life Is Rubbish, Parklife, and The Great Escape. The self-titled 1997 album and 13 (1999) drew on American lo-fi and experimental indie rock. Think Tank (2003) incorporated electronic and African music influences.
