Bikini Kill formed in Olympia, Washington in late 1990 around vocalist Kathleen Hanna, drummer Tobi Vail (a key zine writer in the Olympia scene), bassist Kathi Wilcox, and guitarist Billy Karren. The band was central to the riot grrrl feminist punk movement of the early 1990s, with Hanna's confrontational performance style and Vail's writing helping to articulate the movement's politics.
