Belle & Sebastian formed in Glasgow, Scotland in early 1996 around Stuart Murdoch, who wrote and assembled the band's first two albums (Tigermilk and If You're Feeling Sinister) during his time as a music student at Stow College. The band's name comes from a French children's television series. They released their early material on Jeepster Records (UK) and Matador (US), then later moved to Rough Trade. The lineup has remained largely stable since the late 1990s, with Stuart David departing in 2000 to focus on his Looper project.
