Beach House formed in Baltimore in 2004 around Victoria Legrand (a French-American singer) and Alex Scally. They signed with Carpark Records for their self-titled debut (2006) and Devotion (2008), then moved to Sub Pop for Teen Dream (2010) onward, with Bella Union releasing their material in the UK. They have remained on Sub Pop / Bella Union throughout their career. Their seventh studio album Once Twice Melody (2022) was released as four chapters across four months.
Beach House's sound combines dream pop, shoegaze, slowcore, and indie pop with Legrand's distinctive contralto vocals, Scally's chiming and reverb-laden guitar work, organ and synth textures, and slow-developing arrangements. Their work has progressively expanded from minimal lo-fi beginnings to lush, dense studio productions.
