Autechre formed in Rochdale, Greater Manchester in 1987 around Sean Booth and Rob Brown. The duo signed to Warp Records in 1992 and has remained on the label throughout their career, releasing over a dozen studio albums and many EPs. Their work has been continuously evolving, moving from sample-based and analog-influenced electronic music in the early 1990s to highly abstract, algorithmically generated compositions on their post-2000 releases.
Autechre's sound spans IDM, ambient, glitch, abstract electronic, and algorithmic composition. Their earlier work (Incunabula through Tri Repetae) drew on hip hop, electro, and ambient techno; their middle period (LP5, Confield, Draft 7.30) moved into more abstract rhythmic territory; their later work (Exai, NTS Sessions) has explored long-form compositions and algorithmically generated material. The duo are known for using extensively customized software and patches in their composition process.
