Rakim Mayers was born in Harlem, New York on October 3, 1988. He joined the A$AP Mob collective around 2007 and rose to prominence with his 2011 mixtape LiveLoveA$AP. He signed a recording contract with Polo Grounds Music, RCA Records, and A$AP Worldwide in 2011, and released his debut studio album Long.Live.A$AP in 2013, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. He has continued releasing through Sony Music and remains a central figure in A$AP Mob alongside members including A$AP Ferg and the late A$AP Yams.

Sound and style

A$AP Rocky's sound combines East Coast hip hop, cloud rap, trap, and psychedelic and alternative production approaches. His work is known for incorporating Houston chopped-and-screwed influences alongside New York traditions, with production from collaborators including Clams Casino, Hector Delgado, and on later albums Dean Blunt and Skepta.
