The Allman Brothers Band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1969 around brothers Duane and Gregg Allman and effectively invented Southern rock — dual lead guitars, two drummers, and the improvisation that fed the whole jam band tradition. The Allman Brothers Band formed in Jacksonville, Florida in March 1969. The original sextet featured Duane Allman (slide and lead guitar), Gregg Allman (organ, lead vocals, songwriting), Dickey Betts (guitar), Berry Oakley (bass), Butch Trucks (drums), and Jai Johanny Johanson, also known as Jaimoe (drums). Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident on October 29, 1971; Berry Oakley died in a similar accident on November 11, 1972. The band continued with personnel changes through the 1970s, dissolved in 1976, reformed in 1979, dissolved again in 1982, and reformed in 1989, with continued activity until their final shows in 2014. Gregg Allman died in 2017.
The Allman Brothers Band are widely credited as the originators of Southern rock and as a foundational influence on the jam band tradition. Their sound combined blues, country, jazz, and rock with extensive improvisation and dual lead guitar work between Duane Allman and Dickey Betts. The dual-drummer configuration of Trucks and Jaimoe was central to their rhythmic identity.
