Alkaline Trio formed in Chicago in 1996. The earliest lineup featured Matt Skiba on guitar and vocals, Rob Doran on bass, and Glenn Porter on drums. Dan Andriano joined on bass shortly after, and the band's longest-running rhythm section settled with Derek Grant on drums in 2001. Skiba also served as a touring and recording member of Blink-182 from 2015 to 2022 while continuing Alkaline Trio activities.
Alkaline Trio's sound combines pop punk and post-hardcore with darker lyrical content drawing on gothic and horror imagery. The band's recordings feature trade-off lead vocals between Skiba and Andriano, melodic punk songwriting, and progressively more polished production on later releases.
