His 1959 album Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs - featuring the landmark single El Paso - is widely cited as one of the foundational documents of Western-themed country music. El Paso won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Country \u0026amp; Western Recording in 1960. He maintained a parallel career as a stock car racer, competing in NASCAR Grand National (now Cup) races throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1982.
